April 10: Cathay Pacific has released its Sustainability Report 2025, highlighting a year of steady progress in its sustainability journey and reaffirming its commitment to supporting the aviation industry’s long-term decarbonisation goals.

Cathay continues to advance its sustainability priorities through strategic investments and collaborative actions

Marking a significant milestone as the company celebrates “80 Years Together” with Hong Kong, the report underscores Cathay’s continued focus on sustainability leadership through strategic investments and collaborative efforts across the aviation value chain.

Commenting on the development, Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer, said,

“Sustainability remains at the core of our journey. Through deeper collaboration and targeted investments—from Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to reducing single-use plastics—we are committed to moving people forward in a more responsible and thoughtful way.”

He further emphasized the complexity of aviation decarbonisation, noting that Cathay is actively supporting the development of a robust Sustainable Aviation Fuel ecosystem through partnerships, investments, and innovation, while also advancing circularity initiatives to reduce waste and reliance on virgin resources.

Key Highlights from the Sustainability Report 2025:

  • Advancing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): Cathay strengthened its role in SAF development by joining as a launch investor in the oneworld BEV Fund and entering a co-investment agreement with Airbus of up to US$70 million. The company’s Corporate SAF Programme expanded to 17 global partners, achieving nearly 180% growth in committed SAF usage year-on-year.
  • Progress in Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Reduction: The company reduced passenger-facing SUP items to an average of 1.7 per passenger in 2025, moving closer to its target of 1.5 by mid-2026. Over 50% of remaining SUP items are now sourced from recycled plastics, alongside expanded inflight water bottle recycling across Hong Kong and eight additional airports, increasing recycling rates to 21%.
  • Community and Workforce Impact: Cathay enhanced its flagship youth programme “I Can Fly,” engaging over 1,550 students with a renewed focus on education and exploration. Strategic partnerships with the Kai Tak Sports Park and the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority further demonstrate its support for sports, arts, and culture. The company also introduced “Belonging@Cathay,” a comprehensive initiative to strengthen diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across its workforce.

As the aviation sector navigates the challenges of decarbonisation, Cathay Pacific continues to position itself at the forefront of sustainable innovation, driving long-term impact through collaboration, responsible operations, and community engagement.
